A Tri-umphant debut
More than 150 participants put their best feet forward to take part in the first ever Try-a-Tri event in Brentwood on Sunday, 2nd July. Organised by Tri Sport Essex, a Triathlon club with a 30-year history, the event provided a great introduction to triathlons and SNAP was chosen as the recipient charity!
Athletes, novices, and parents alike had a go at a 200-metre swim, followed by a 10K cycle and a 2K run or participated in a duathlon. There was also a junior’s triathlon for those aged 9-15.
Try a Tri Event Co-ordinator, Nimo Saeed said, “This challenge was a great way to get active and try out different sports in a fun, supportive environment. Athletes ages ranged from as young as 9 to 71 – not many events can boast such a wide age range!”
The event also hosted entertainment for approximately 500 spectators and there was something for the whole family – a petting zoo by Rocky’s Animals, face painting, baseball, judo, and novelty bikes. Advice and post event support was also available to participants including a podiatrist, healthy food preparation tips, and several physios giving massages.
First-time triathlete, Scott Lighterness, felt very reassured on the event day and was delighted that his efforts were rewarded. He personally raised a £540 for SNAP!
“We were put at ease at the debrief, and the whole event was very well organised. The distance was just right for a first timer, and gave me a really good insight into the workings of a triathlon, without being daunting. As a family, we also appreciated the fun day element, as this meant that my loved ones were entertained while I was taking part. Most importantly, it was great to be able to raise money for SNAP Charity whilst having fun.”
The Tri Sports Essex team were euphoric with the amount raised. “It gives me great pleasure to confirm that we have raised a fantastic £5,000 for SNAP through the Try-a-Tri 2023 event and I am sure I am speaking for everyone when I say we are all over the moon for raising such a large amount of money on our very first event.” beamed Nimo.
Huge thanks to the Brentwood UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) for their grant as well as Headline Sponsor, Bakers, and Associate Sponsors – Katie’s Life Kitchen, Blue Serif, Richard Rushworth from Thomas Oliver, Unison IT, Peter Garland-Collins from KW Estate Agents, Box Gym Fitness, Kinetic Podiatry Clinic and Marlborough Highways for making this possible.
Tri Sport Essex are hoping to host the event again next year, so watch this space!
