One Mission, 26.2 Miles: SNAP Dad Runs for SNAP
SNAP dad, Marc, ran for SNAP in the 2025 London Marathon. He shared with us why he chose to run for a local cause and about his marathon journey.
Why did you run for SNAP?
“My son Joe was born 11 weeks premature and suffered a bleed on the brain which caused hydrocephalus (a build-up of fluid in the brain).
SNAP helped Joe and our family through the first couple of years, not only with one-on-one support, but also some great advice on the condition and things like schools etc. I felt it was time to raise some more money for a great local charity.”
What inspired you to take part in the London Marathon?
“I’m a runner anyway and this was my 4th London Marathon. I won’t run any other marathon; it will only ever be London. It’s hard work training and running a marathon at the best of times, so with London being the pinnacle in marathon events, it can only be this one for me.”
How did you find training? How long did you train for?
“I had a training plan from the end of November last year, so it’s a long slog really! It all went ok up until around 6 weeks prior to the marathon, probably just after the Brentwood Half. I started struggling with little niggles after that event – I think my body had had enough by then!”
Top tips on what to do and what not to do in training and on the day.
“You have to listen to your body. If you do feel some pain etc, then rest up. Don’t try to make up time / miles if you miss some in training, just stick to the plan overall. As long as you’re out there getting miles in your legs, it’s all good – even this is a slow jog or walking.”
How did it go on the day?
“The day itself was great, but as mentioned before I wasn’t quite ready for it – plus it ended up being much warmer than I would have liked it. I’m not one for sitting in the sun, let alone running in it. I was starting to feel the heat at around 8 or 9 mile and from then on it was very much a walk / run effort to get to the finish, but a great time overall. The crowds were amazing.”
Would you do a marathon again?
“Yes I probably would, but as mentioned it would only be London. All depends on whether I get a ballot place again – which to be honest, is pretty unlikely!”
Anything else you would like to share?
“I think if anyone is thinking they’d like to do the London Marathon (and especially raise money for SNAP), then go for it. I really believe anyone can walk / run the event. Obviously you need to train for it, it’s not easy to run 26.2 miles – but it’s a great experience.”
