SNAP are please to welcome Kathryn Miller who will be hosting this session which aims to help parents and professionals understand more about the presentation of autism more often seen in girls and women.
Do you feel like much of what you hear and read about autism does not resonate?
Do you find that your daughter/granddaughter is not showing autistic behaviours?
Do you find it hard to get others (family/friends/professionals) to understand how autism can be different?
It is becoming increasingly evident that many girls with autism are still falling through the net due to a typically ‘boy-led’ way of thinking about autism. Even the diagnostic criteria is still heavily weighted to recognise certain behaviours and traits that girls often don’t show.
This course aims to explore how and why girls may present differently, and why some girls might receive incorrect or incomplete diagnoses making it difficult to access appropriate support and identify effective strategies. We will also consider how to encourage greater understanding and empathy, as well as looking at the behaviours that can challenge our thinking and create worry and concern for girls. It is suitable for parents, grandparents and carers as well as professionals who would like to learn more about autism in girls, not necessarily just those girls who have a diagnosis.
