ABILITYNET is a national charity whose aim is to make the benefits of using computers available to disabled children and adults. Through its network of centres, AbilityNet provides specialist help for people with a disability to enable them to use a computer at home, in education or in employment. A helpline is available from 9am to 5pm each weekday, but is closed for lunch from 12:30pm to 1:30pm daily. A series of courses and workshops are run on the potential of computers to empower disabled people, and professionals in health, education and special needs.

ACCESS FORUM has fourteen local groups across the county. Their function is to promote the adoption of "Barrier Free Design" so as to create environments which are accessible, and can be used by everyone. If you have a problem with access to a building in your area, your local group may be able to take up the issue with the Local Authority. The Essex Access Forum also concentrates on county issues such as parking on pavements etc.

ACE (Advisory Centre for Education) is a national charity that gives free, confidential and impartial advice to parents of school age children who are having problems in school. AYME (Association of Young People with Myalgic Encephalopathy) provides information, support and advice to children and young people with ME, their families and friends. Members are aged up to 25 years and membership is free. Membership offers a matched pen-pal and e-mates service, postal library, members only message board and chat room, and a bi-monthly magazine called 'Cheers'. There are medical, educational and benefit advisers and psychologists. The telephone helpline is open 10am to 2pm weekdays and Wednesday evenings 6pm to 9pm.
