AFASIC

AFASIC is the UK charity representing children and young adults with communication impairments, working for their inclusion in society and supporting their parents and carers. The helpline is open 10.30am to 2.30pm weekdays. Sue Pudney is the Thurrock Correspondent for Afasic and has access to up-to-date information and can be contacted on 01375 670547. Afasic has a club in Redbridge where a warm welcome is extended to young people aged 11 to 19 years with speech and language impairments, their siblings and friends. THE SPEECH, LANGUAGE & HEARING CENTRE

THE SPEECH, LANGUAGE & HEARING CENTRE is for children under five who have hearing impairment or delay in speech, language and communication. A structured language-enriched programme is offered to each child in small groups and one-to-one therapy and they will see children from anywhere in the UK by self-referral. The Centre has a Child Sponsorship Fund to support parents.

THE STARFISH PROJECT

THE STARFISH PROJECT is a non-profit making project for training young people aged 12 to 18 years and adults who stammer or stutter to both control and gain confidence over something that has controlled them. Training on all Starfish courses is on a one-to-one basis, given by recovering stammerers. It combines compassion and care, to teach successful methods of diaphragmatic retraining (costal breathing), avoidance reduction therapy and positive attitude development. TINYTALK BABY SIGNING

TINYTALK BABY SIGNING provides a friendly and supportive environment where young children and their parents or carers can learn simple BSL signing together. The groups are geared to the needs of children aged 0 to 3 years, and include lots of signing, play time for the little ones and a social half hour for carers.
