History Eight families founded SNAP in 1994. They were anxious about the lack of relevant provision and assistance from which they had suffered as parents of young children with disabilities. In 1997 SNAP was successful in receiving Lottery funding to set up and equip an office, which was opened in May 1998 by our patron Steve Davis, the former world snooker champion. In 1999 Scope, the UK's largest disability charity, partially funded the recruitment of a manager. These two developments enabled the charity to increase its activities and become even more established in the local community. There are now over 1,100 families who use SNAP's services and every week new families turn to SNAP for help. Existing families remain with SNAP because as their children with special needs become older, the problems that they face do not go away but evolve. There is therefore a continuing need for advice and support.
